But if you’re lucky enough to have a bedroom that leads to a nice outdoor space or balcony area, you may be thinking about the best way to open up the view and bring a wide clear passage from inside directly outside with a new set of doors. Perhaps your existing doors are old and worn out or perhaps you want to make the door opening wider to allow more light into your room and brighten up your space.
Anyway, in any case there are a couple of different options available that can definitely help to make your bedroom appear and feel larger, more spacious, lighter and airier. Which of the two is perfect for you will all depend on the space that you have, whether or not there is an angled wall and most importantly your personal design preference .
French Doors
Great for:
- Larger bedrooms
- Outdoor spaces with good clearance around the door opening
- Older style homes
French doors are one way to make sure you get that resort feel at home. Throw them open, add stylish curtains that blow gently in the breeze and you have an easy way to make a bedroom feel larger than it is. But if your bedroom is more compact then perhaps French doors wouldn’t be the answer as they do take a fair amount of space when open, and could block table or bureau placement within the room.
Bifold Doors
Great for:
- Bedrooms that lead out to a big outdoor or balcony space
- Long walls next to a balcony or outdoor space
If you really want to be able to open up the entire wall between your bedroom and outdoor area, bifold doors can’t be beaten. That being said they would probably work best if this wall is really long because the doors must have a minimum of two panels which fold and stack on top of each other.
You’ll also need to choose whether you want the doors to stack left or right. Most bifold doors can be set in either direction and will depend on the size of opening you have available in your outdoor space. You can choose to single side stack (when the panels all open up and stack onto one side) or double side stack (the panels open up to centre and then proceed to fold towards either sides of the opening) them.
Regular bifold doors have been matched with a standard hinged door here, another fabulous way to be able to access and leave your bedroom without opening all the bifold doors.
Sliding Doors
Great for:
- Almost any situation
- Budget option to bifold doors
- Smaller openings
Sliding doors are as always a firm favourite and best selling door style for good reason. They’re good for almost any situation, whether or not you have a lot of space on the inside or outside of your home because they occupy about the same amount of space either open or closed. They’re equally fast to open and close when all you want is to pop out for a cup of morning coffee.
If the wall in your bedroom against the outside is a bit larger, then you should consider choosing a four panel sliding door with two of the outermost panels that are going to be stationary and two middle ones that slide open.
Stacker Doors
Great for:
- Bedrooms with long walls
- Bigger openings
- Making the most of your space
Stacker doors are one of the most popular and convenient door systems available. There is no set of panels which swing out or encroach on your space when open, they simply stack like a deck of cards. If you’d like a configuration with more than two panels then the sliding panels will have to slide and stack on top of each other when they’re open. Like sliding doors, stacker doors can be designed so that they open outwards from the centre with each panel stacking on opposite sides of the wall.
What matters most isn’t just the technical specifications, it’s how the doors make you feel when you walk through them each morning. The right door transforms a bedroom from just a sleeping space into something that breathes with the rhythm of your day.
